Okay this is just to sum things up. Personally I think that the anti-smacking bill is a stupid piece of legislation (much like that of putting microchips in dogs to stop them attacking children) that does not address the actual problem it was meant to fix. Children are being beaten to death not smacked to death, Anti-Beating law? Could that have been a better idea? If we were trying to stop people murdering each other would we call it the anti-assault law?
Reading through blogs I have found that a lot of people say things like "I was abused as a child and would never do that to my children", statements similar to this have been repeated throughout the blogs i have looked at. Not to belittle or make fun of the fact that these people were abused, but these people were "abused" not smacked and thus in my opinion incapable of understanding the difference. I can say quite openly that I was smacked as a child, and thinking back I can remember more often than not I deserved it (whether or not i have simply been brainwashed to believe this I cannot say).
I looked forward to the forth coming referendum, and hope this time that it is given its due process rather than being steamrolled through parliament like it was last time.

I am writing to express my thoughts about the anti-smacking bill that was passed in 2009, however due to the media attention this got it was blown way out of context and the media framed it. I totally agree with this article and this law allows parents to smack their children, just not to the extreme where it would end in court as domestic violence. This was to stop parents defending themselves and arguing that it was just a light smack, when it was domestic violence. This law protects children from family violence, however does not stop a parent from disciplining their child in an appropriate manner. The media portrayed this law as being 'no smacking whatsoever' however that's not true. The media has spun this story in a way which forced the public to believe that the law wouldn’t allow a parent to smack their children. I was brought up and a light smack or soap in my mouth when I swore was definitely what I needed and believe parents should be allowed to do this. It infuriates me how the media has spun a story like this to portray to the public that the anti-smacking law stops parents from smacking their kids, when in fact it doesn’t. This leaves me thinking what other stories out there have been spun by the media to create hype?
